Affordable kids' rug: a space exploration between planets and rockets
The affordable kids' rug transforms a deep purple background into an imaginary map of space. Colorful planets, yellow stars, rockets, astronauts, satellites, and comets are spread across the entire surface. A large sun appears in one corner, while several orbits give movement to the scene.
Eight dimensions are available: 40x60, 60x90, 80x120, 80x160, 100x150, 120x160, 160x200, and 160x230 cm. The range allows you to choose between a small window into the universe and a wider panorama where each character becomes easy to spot.
- Purple background: a deep base that highlights the bright illustrations.
- Space decor: rockets, astronauts, planets, and satellites compose the scene.
- Numerous details: stars, comets, and small celestial bodies invite you to explore the image.
- Eight sizes: from 40x60 to 160x230 cm for various room volumes.
Choosing the adventure surface
The 40x60 and 60x90 cm sizes create a compact accent. The 80x120 to 120x160 cm formats offer an intermediate scene near a bed or a reading nook. The 160x200 and 160x230 cm sizes give more space to the planets and trajectories.
Locate three elements in the template
Mark the location of the large sun, a rocket, and Earth in the simulated outline. This method helps orient the scene so that favorite illustrations remain visible from the entrance.
| Category | Formats | Decor reading | Area to imagine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact | 40x60, 60x90 cm | Concentrated illustrations | Small accent |
| Intermediate | 80x120 to 120x160 cm | Balanced scene | Bed or reading nook |
| Large | 160x200, 160x230 cm | Developed panorama | Ample composition |
Composing a palette based on the planets
Purple can be accompanied by midnight blue and gray for a deep cosmic ambiance. The yellow of the stars and the orange of the planets provide warmth. White, present on the suits and certain trajectories, adds light to the whole.
Choose two colors from the design for accessories, for example blue and yellow or orange and turquoise. Solid-colored storage avoids adding a second illustrated universe. A small round lamp can evoke a planet without exactly reproducing the patterns.
Create a path between floor and wall
Reprenez une étoile ou une planète dans une illustration murale placée au-dessus de la zone. Le regard passe alors naturellement du tapis vers le décor vertical.
The marker that preserves the visual story
Keep several planets and at least one astronaut clear. The scene remains rich and the various imaginary journeys remain easy to follow.
Orienting the rug like a map
The affordable kids' rug can place the large sun near the wall to let the rockets advance towards the center of the room. Turned the other way, it makes the sun a very bright entry point. Both readings create a different ambiance.
With a compact format, pair the rectangle with a specific piece of furniture rather than isolating it. With a large size, place the bulkier furniture on the edges in order to keep the heart of the galaxy visible. A solid-colored pouf can pick up an astral color.
In a bedroom, align the long side with the bed to extend the perspective. In a reading nook, turn a rocket towards the armchair to create a fun direction between the seat and the central part of the decor.
Distance transforms the design: from afar, the purple and bright colors compose an animated sky; up close, small satellites, craters, and trajectories appear. Leave one side free to enjoy these two levels of detail.
Two atmospheres for traveling
Midnight blue and yellow stars
Combine white storage, a blue seat, and two yellow accessories for a clear and coherent palette.
Purple, orange, and turquoise
Pick up the colors of the planets on a cushion, a round lamp, and an illustration with simple shapes.
The range includes eight formats, from 40x60 to 160x230 cm.
The visual features planets, rockets, astronauts, satellites, stars, and comets.
Deep purple constitutes the main background of the scene.
Place the sun or the main rocket toward the viewpoint you wish to highlight.
White, yellow, orange, and turquoise provide bright accents.
Rug Size Guide
Select the perfect size for your rug
A well-sized rug transforms a space: it anchors furniture, streamlines circulation, and enhances ambiance. Choosing the right size depends largely on the room, the furniture, and the space required. Use this simple, visual guide to make a confident decision.
It is essential to consider the space where the rug will be placed.
In the living room
- 2-3 seater sofa → 160×230 cm minimum. Ideal: 200×300 cm if the room allows it.
- Aim for at least the front two legs of the sofa on the rug. Leave 20–30 cm of air space from the walls.
- In a corner configuration, go wide: the rug should extend 15–25 cm beyond the coffee table all around.
In the dining room
- Add ~60cm around the table to pull out the chairs without snagging.
- Table 160×90 → rug ~240×340 ; table Ø120 → rug Ø200 (if round, for information).
- Prefer a flat weave (chairs that slide better).
In the bedroom
- Bed 140/160 → rug 200×290 (or 160×230 at the foot of the bed).
- Alternative small rooms : two 50×160 runners on each side.
- Visual comfort: 60–70 cm overhang on the bed exit side.
Entrance & hallway
- Measure the net width and leave 5–10 cm of air on each side.
- Practical formats: 45×115 , 40×120 , 50×160 , 80×120 depending on the length.
- Add a non-slip rug pad for safety.

What about round rugs?
Diameter replaces length/width. Choose Ø according to the central piece of furniture:
- Bedroom or reading corner : Ø120–Ø160 under an armchair or at the foot of the bed.
- Round table : table Ø120 → ideal rug Ø200 (clearance of ~40 cm all around the chairs).
- Entrance : Ø90–Ø120 for a soft visual welcome, without obstructing the door opening.
How to measure quickly and well
The paper or masking-tape template
Cut out a rectangle to the target dimensions (or trace with painter's tape ) and live with it for 24 hours. Check: circulation, alignment with furniture, door/drawer clearances.
Simple rules
- Living room : a 20–30 cm gap from the walls, the front legs of the seating on the rug.
- Dining room : +60 cm minimum all around the table.
- Bedroom : 60–70 cm overhang on the bed exit side or two 50×160 runners.
Rug too small (“floating” effect), place a long pile under low doors (friction), forget the non-slip underlay, center it on the room instead of the living area.
This rug size guide helps you quickly select the right size for each room. Need personalized advice? Measure your area, note the width of your key pieces of furniture, and compare with the table above.
Adjust the size to the surface area of the room
Small room (< 12 m²)
Choose a rug that leaves the baseboards free (edge 20–30 cm from the wall) to avoid the “wall-to-wall” effect that visually shrinks. A 120x160 or 140x200 works well, or two 50x160 runners in “Japanese steps” for the bedroom.
Medium room (12–20 m²)
The 160×230 is a versatile standard for living rooms and bedrooms. If you have generous furnishings (corner sofa, sideboard), move up to the 200×300 to maintain balanced proportions.
Large room (> 20 m²)
Aim for a large size (200x300 or 240x340 depending on the collection) to anchor the area . In an open living room, a large rug “reads” the seating and defines separate areas without partitioning.
Shapes & proportions (rect., square, round, oval)
- Rectangular : the easiest to align with furniture (sofas, beds, rectangular tables). A natural choice if the room is elongated.
- Square : Perfect for a square room or a conversation area with two armchairs and a square coffee table.
- Round : softens very straight architecture, enhances round tables and reading corners.
- Oval : excellent in a wide hallway or dining room with an oval table, as it follows the flow without sharp corners.
Visual tip : Always align one side of the rug with a strong axis (edge of the sofa, edge of the bed, edge of the table). This “vanishing line” immediately calms the composition.
Living room layouts: practical examples
Straight sofa + 1 armchair
Objective : Front legs of the sofa + base of the armchair on the rug. Typical size: 160×230 (compact living room) or 200×300 (standard living room).
Corner sofa (L)
Choose a rug that extends 15–25 cm beyond the coffee table and lean towards 200x300 to avoid the cramped effect under the chaise longue.
Two sofas facing each other
Choose a large size (200x300) so that each seat has at least the front legs on it. A rug that is too small “opens” a gap in the center.
Open space & zoning
In an open space, the rug serves as a functional signal : a large 240x340 rug under the living room, a 200x300 rug under the table, and an 80x240 runner to guide traffic. Keep at least 15 cm between the edge of the rug and the main passageway.
Round, rectangular or extendable table?
| Table shape | Table dimensions | Recommended rug | Clearance around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangular | 140×80 | 200×290 | ~60 cm for chairs |
| Rectangular | 160×90 | 240×340 | ~60 cm |
| Rectangular | 180×90 | 240×340 (or 250×350) | ~60 cm |
| Round | Ø100 | Ø180 | ~40–50 cm |
| Round | Ø120 | Ø200 | ~40–60 cm |
| Stretchable | 160→200 | 240×340 | ~60 cm (open position) |
Measure the open position of extendable tables and size your rug accordingly.
Bedroom: bed, bench and runners
- Rug under bed bench : add 20–30 cm on each side of the bench to avoid the “sitting on the edge” impression.
- Two runners : 50×160 or 60×180, placed ~10 cm from the bed, aligned at the bedside.
- Small bedroom : prefer at the foot of the bed (160×230) rather than “full under the bed”, to keep breathing space on the sides.
Corridors & Stairs
Measure the finished width, deduct 5–10 cm from each side. For the length, leave 10–15 cm free before the threshold and door. Use a non-slip underlay : essential in high-traffic areas.
Thickness, doors & maintenance
- Low doors : Beware of long-pile rugs (risk of friction). A flat weave is safer near openings.
- Maintenance : the larger the rug, the more crumbs and dust it will “eat” — plan to vacuum regularly (brush OFF on loop pile).
- Rug underlay : improves stability, comfort and longevity (less wear from sliding).
Quick FAQ
How to convert cm ↔ inches? 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Divide cm by 2.54 to get inches (e.g. 200 cm ≈ 78.74 in).
My living room feels empty despite a large sofa. What should I do? Go from 160x230 to 200x300 or add a perpendicular runner to close off the area.
A square rug in a rectangular living room? Yes, if you create a separate reading corner (armchair + floor lamp + square coffee table).
Round table on a rectangular rug? Possible, but demanding: keep at least 30–40 cm of air space on each side of the rectangle for a balanced effect.
Can you layer two rugs? Yes, to “zone” a space. Large neutral base + smaller pattern on top (10–20 cm overlap).
Choose a rug size in 3 minutes
- Measure the living area, not just the entire room: sofa and coffee table, bed and nightstands, or table and chairs.
- Mark two sizes on the floor with masking tape to compare their actual presence.
- Test walkways and openings : doors, drawers, chairs and circulation must remain easy to use.
- Look from the room's entrance : the rug should connect furniture rather than float in the middle.
What rug size suits your sofa?
| Layout | Format to Test | Point to check |
|---|---|---|
| Small two-seat sofa | 140×200 ou 160×230 cm | Keep the rug wide enough to extend visually beyond the sofa. |
| 3-seater sofa | 160×230 ou 200×300 cm | Rest the sofa's front legs on the rug. |
| Corner sofa | 200 × 300 cm or larger, depending on the room | Include the chaise section in the rug's visual area. |
| Two facing sofas | 200 × 300 cm or a large size | Connect both seating units rather than leaving an empty center. |
For a specific L-shaped layout, read our guide what rug to choose for a corner sofa.
What size rug goes under a 90, 140, 160 or 180 cm bed?
The right size mainly depends on the visible border you want around the bed. A rug entirely beneath it creates a defined base; placing it under the lower two-thirds is often easier in a small bedroom.
- 90 cm bed: choose a compact rug or a runner beside the bed.
- 140 cm bed: test 160 × 230 cm or larger depending on the visible border you want.
- 160 cm bed: 200 × 290/300 cm usually provides a more balanced presence.
- 180 cm bed: a large rug keeps visible bedside areas at the sides and foot.
Our dedicated guide what size rug goes under a bed explains layouts for each bed size.
The final check before buying

Frequently asked questions
Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. If you cannot find what you are looking for, do not hesitate to contact us.
How do I choose the size of my rug?
The size of your rug depends on the room and the layout of your furniture. For a living room, for example, a large rug under which all the furniture fits gives a feeling of space. A smaller rug can define a space, such as a conversation area.
Do the photos online reflect the actual color of the rug?
We do our best to make colors as accurate as possible. However, shades may vary depending on screens and brightness settings.
How do I maintain my rug?
Maintenance depends on the rug material . Generally, a vacuum cleaner without a rotating brush used regularly and occasional professional cleaning are recommended.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship to many countries around the world. Shipping costs and times may vary depending on destination.
What is the return policy?
You have 14 days after receipt to return your rug if it does not suit you. Make sure it is in its original condition and see our "Return Policy" page for more details.
Are the rugs pet resistant?
Our rugs are durable, but their resistance to animals depends on the material. Some rugs are more suitable for homes with pets. See product description for more information.
How do you know if a rug is non-slip?
Most of our rugs have a detailed description that indicates whether the rug is non-slip or whether it is recommended to use a non-slip underlay.
Does your site offer custom-made rugs?
We offer a varied selection of sizes, but at this time we do not offer a bespoke service.
What are the forms of payment accepted ?
We accept most major credit cards, PayPal, and other online payment methods. Visit our “Payment Methods” page for more information.
How do I know if a rug is in stock?
The stock status is indicated on the page of each product. If a mat is out of stock, this will be clearly indicated.
